Eric Koston and Nike SB have teamed up with Danish giants, Soulland in an exciting collaboration this summer, entitled ‘FRI.day’. “It’s the feeling of a Friday but also the feeling of freedom. ‘Fri’ means freedom in Danish,” clarifies the Copenhagen-based brand. The result is an interesting capsule collection that successfully embodies each contributing brand, yet remains slightly different to what they would usually release. This, to me, is what a collaboration should be. We see far too many collaborations these days, most of which lack excitement or creativity, however this is culturally an exciting partnership between two big brands and the outcome is great. On the subject of the collaboration, Koston stated, “I’m a fan of Copenhagen as well as Silas’ design aesthetic, throw in the fact that he’s a skateboarder and it’s a perfect fit!”
The collection consists of coach jackets, blazers, hoodies, button-down shirts, trousers and graphic print T-shirts, translated into familiar Soulland styles, adorned with FRI.day branding and patches of colour and textiles. On the sneaker front, we see the Koston Hyperfeel 3 and the Koston 1 sneakers revamped with new materials geared for performance, with the ankle sock on the Hyperfeel 3 also adoring FRI.day branding. The attention to detail and choice of materials on the Hyperfeel 3 is second to none.
To celebrate the launch, Nike SB and Soulland worked on a special skate video featuring Koston in his less familiar territories of Copenhagen. A popular destination for skaters from around the world due to it’s skate spots, Koston was joined by local skaters, Hjalte Halberg, Karsten Kleppan, Hugo Boserup, Ville Wester and Oskar Rozenberg. Directed by Soulland co-founder, Silas Adler & filmmaker, Simon Weyhe, the video portrays the unique, relaxed youth culture of Copenhagen that was a big inspiration behind the collection. The eight-and-a-half-minute edit (above) has a style very different to what we have come to expect from Nike SB over the years and is well worth a watch.
